11001-01824 North Island brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli) woven feather cloak, or kahu kiwi, with the great Maori weaver Diggeress Rangituatahi Te Kanawa CNZM QSO. Diggeresss was a tohunga raranga (master weaver) of Ngati Maniapoto and Ngati Kinohaku descent. At the time of her death in July 2009, she was regarded as New Zealand's most renowned weaver. She was a great teacher of weaving, and she intentionally used a wide variety of techniques to encourage their survival. She also taught traditional methods of preparing harakeke (NZ flax), and the use of traditional earthen dyes. Rod met and photographed Diggeress at Oparure in 1986 *
