PC_110163 Wakame, or Japanese kelp (Undaria pinnatifida) underwater view of ruffled sporophyll at base of plant in early summer, as the plants die off. Highly valued as a food source in Japan and Korea, Undaria has been accidentally introduced around the world, probably through shipping. It first appeared in Wellington in 1987 and is now widespread, occuring as far south as the Snares. Wellers Rock Otago Harbour.
