DSC_3053 Cornel-leaved pittosporum, or tāwhirikaro (Pittosporum cornifolium) a shrub epiphyte, growing on rocks or other trees. Branches have a distinctive whorled architecture, with 3-5 oval pointed leaves and delicately perfumed, orange-reddish flowers on long stalks in spring. It is endemic to old growth forests in the (now fragmented) coastal and lowland areas in the North Island and the Marlborough Sounds of the South Island. Phylogenetic studies suggest a New Caledonian origin for the species. *
