Standing a little over 50m tall, and estimated to be between anywhere between 1,250 and 2,500 years old, Tane Mahuta (father of the forest) was first identified by europeans in the 1920s when contractors surveyed the present State Highway 12 route through the forest. DSC_5702 Kauri (Agathis australis) a group of four separate kauri trees, that are believed to have come from four seeds from the same parent tree, and have co-existed for about 500 years. These trees have evenly spaced, slender trunks and the branches which radiate outwards, away from their close neighbours. Waipoua Forest, Northland *
