11009-06501 Totara (Podocarpus totara var. totara) a 1200 year old tree in Pureoa forest. Such trees were the focus of the world’s first tree-sitting campaign to save a forest, which was held in January 1978 to halt our remaining podocarp forests from being logged by the NZ Forest Service. This particular tree - the 'TV totara' still has the old protest platform visible 30m above the ground - a pine forklift pallet jammed between large branches, where protester Bernard King (17 years old) had sat - it serves as a poignant tribute to one of this countries most important conservation battles.
