11009-13103 Chatham Island iceplant (Disphyma papillatum) following the removal of sheep from Mangere Island in 1968, native vegetation slowly began to re-establish in areas that had previously been pasture. Throughout the 1970s (when this picture was taken), the native iceplant spread until it dominated many of the exposed lower slopes of the island. Each summer the slopes were a spectacular carpet of pink as the iceplant flowered. Mangere island, Chatham Islands Group *
