DSC_3343 Crystalwort (Atriplex billardierei) a native coastal strand plant which grows on the shoreline lower than any other native flowering plant. Now thought to be extinct in NZ and in most of Australia, (it once grew in the South Island and on Stewart Islands), it is known only from Tasmania, and the Chatham Islands. *
DSC_0678 Marram grass (Ammophila arenaria) an introduced grass - native to Europe and North Africa - which was brought to New Zealand to stabilise sand dunes for forestry plantings and erosion control. It is now invasive in some areas, out-competing and displacing native species and altering coastal topography. Smaills Beach, Otago Peninsula
