11009-13708 Ambush vine, or mawhai (Sicyos mawhai) tendrils, flowers and fruit. An endemic relict, and an annual climber with stems up to 10m long. Once found throughout northern New Zealand as far south as the Marlborough Sounds. Now extinct in the South Island, and probably on the North Island mainland. Now restricted to the more remote northern offshore and outlying islands e.g Three Kings, Poor Knights and Mokohinau Islands, and on the Kermadecs. Is susceptible to cucumber, watermelon and zucchini mosaic virus which probably accounts for its sudden decline from the accessible parts of its range. Little Barrier Island. *
