DSC_3513 Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium var. incanum) large pink flowers of the cultivar 'Keatleyi' - collected from an autotetraploid (4 chromosome sets) wild manuka, - which presumably originated within the wild diploid population. Discovered in 1917 by Capt. Keatley, somewhere between Parengarenga Harbour and North Cape, it is distinguished by its erect habit, hairy grey-green leaves, large 2.5cm flowers and large seed capsules. It is no longer common in cultivation, and was said to be notoriously difficult to propagate. Cape Reinga *
