DSC_1031 Native bee (Leioproctus monticola) this species occurs throughout NZ from sea level to 1620m, however it's widespread distribution throughout the mountainous regions is distinctive. It appears it may only gather pollen from the flowers of native Hebe species, although it has been seen occasionally taking nectar from Carmichaelia and manuka flowers. Dunedin, Otago *
DSC_1356 Native bee (Leioproctus boltoni) feeding on nectar from the flowers of the endangered Coastal tree broom (Carmichaelia muritai). This seems to be one of the most widespread, and abundant native bee throughout New Zealand. Occuring from sea level to 1050m, typically wherever its favoured native host flowers - manuka and kanuka - are found. However the species has also been recorded on other native, and introduced species, so there may be some plasticity in pollen collecting behaviour. Clifford Bay, Marlborough *
DSC_1362 Native bee (Leioproctus boltoni) seems to be one of the most widespread, and abundant native bee throughout New Zealand. Occuring from sea level to 1050m, and wherever its favoured native host flowers - manuka and kanuka - are found, so pollen and nectar are present in most areas. However this species has also been recorded on Carmichaelia, 5 other native, and 5 introduced species, so there is some plasticity in pollen collecting behaviour. Dunedin , Otago *
