DSC_2966 Bubbled ground beetle (Megadromus bullatus) a large (30mm), metallic green carabid with sculptured chains of 'bubbles' down the elytra. Found sporadically, in the wet southern beech forests of Otago, Southland and Stewart Island, but nowhere common. Ground beetles are fast moving, surface dwelling predators. DSC_9676 Ground beetle (Mecodema chiltoni) a large (42mm) black carabid with a reddish elytra. One of 63 currently recognised species of Mecodema in New Zealand. Found on the Carrick Range, on the Nevis side of the Hector Mountains, in the southern and central Eyre Mountains, and at Bold Peak near Kinloch. Ranges between 606-1524m (although generally below 1100m). Found in tussock grassland, and beech forest. Irthing Stream, Eyre Mountains *
