DSC_8600 Knobbled weevil (Hadramphus stilbocarae) habitat, with the host plant Anisotome lyalli growing above hide tide at the back of the beach. The large flightless weevil is vulnerable to rat predation and now only survives on rat-free islands. Two other known weevil host plants are the megaherbs Stilbocarpa lyalli and S. robusta. 11005-67018 Speargrass weevil (Lyperobius huttoni) a large flightless, reddish brown to black weevil. This legally protected species was once widespread around Wellington's south coast and coastal hills. But by the late 1980's it was facing extinction in many of these areas. South Island populations remain in eastern montane and subalpine regions from Marlborough to south Canterbury. Host plants are Aciphylla aurea, A.colensoi, and A.squarrosa. 11005-67013 Speargrass weevil (Lyperobius montanus) a large, flightless weevil found in wetter regions along the Main Divide in Fiordland. It feeds on Aciphylla congesta and Anisotome haasti. Speargrass weevils unlike other giant NZ weevils now condfined to rat-free islands, remain present on the mainland in subalpine habitats, however apart from a small population on the Wellington coastline, speargrass weevils are now restricted to the South Island.
