DSC_4765 Passionvine hopper (Scolypopa australis) wingless nymph or 'fluffy bum'. The nymphs have a white tuft of white filaments on the end of the abdomen. They can move the tuft of filaments up and down, but It is usually held upright. They will suddenly jump off a leaf when disturbed. This planthopper arrived from Australia around 1876. Both the nymphs and adults suck plant juices and they are thought to be a carrier of 'sudden decline disease' in cabbage trees. A common garden pest in summer from Nelson and Marlborough northwards.
