DSC_4805 Northern striped gecko (Toropuku inexpectatus) male on kanuka. Only a dozen or so individuals have so far been found of this rare and elusive gecko. Note the distinctive 'cork bark' patterning. These animals are extremely cryptic in the wild, and if disturbed, can make a 'catapaulting' leap from danger in a remarkable display of agility and power. The Southern striped gecko, and the Matapia gecko are also agile leapers. Coromandel Peninsula *
