11003-82011 Small-scaled skink (Oligosoma microlepis) an interesting inland relative of the Shore skink (Oligosoma smithi). Restricted to the Maowhango, Rangitikei, and Taruarau River catchments, where it inhabits boulder river beds and rock piles. In the Pliocene about 4 mya, the southern coastline of the North Island would have been located in this region. The skink is thought to have evolved from Shore skink ancestors of that time.
