11001-44302 Chatham Island teal (Pachyanas chathamica) MNZ S29475. An extinct duck with reduced wings, though not flightless. This 1.5kg duck was larger and stouter than the brown teal, which recent genetic work reveals it to be related to. It should be included in the same genus as our other teal. A heavily constructed skull and well marked depressions for salt glands, suggest its main habitat was the saline waters of Te Whanga Lagoon
