11001-48210 Chatham Island rail (Caballus modestus) extinct. The male, shown here, exhibits the 'loose fluffy' plumage typical of the species, and had a significantly longer bill than the female. This was the smallest of three flightless species of extinct rails once found on the Chathams, all of which had long down curved bills. The speciman was probably collected from Mangere Island *
