12005-33004 Tasmanian hairy cicada (Tettigarcta tomentosa) one of only two species in the family Tettigarctidae, with ancestral morphology, similar to fossilized cicadas. They are known for their hairy appearance. This unusual Tasmanian endemic is nocturnal and behaves more like a moth. It is also 'silent', males are incapable of the high trilling of other cicadas, and produce instead, a low-intensity call which vibrates through plants, and is heard through sensors between the claws at the ends of their legs.
