With four subspecies, this is the largest. It also has the widest remaining distribution, extending from the western side of the Panai Lakes in Irian Jaya, along the central mountains to the Kratke Range in the eastern highlands of Papua, New Guinea. It can occur from as low as 1300m, up to 4,500m in the Carstenz Range, where its preferred habitat now seems to be inaccessible alpine meadows.
