One of seven distinctive species of macaque endemic to Sulawesi - all of which are thought to have evolved from a single ancestral population. This species is limited to the central section of the northern peninsula. It was once considered a subspecies of M. nigra, and it is believed to hybridize with M. nigra where their ranges overlap to the western end. Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park, North Sulawesi.
