DSC_1783 Swainsons lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus moluccanus) the 'rainbow lorikeet' has about 20 subspecies in some classifications; although, several of these are sometimes split off to form up to four additional species. Rainbow lories harvest all of the pollen and/or nectar that they required to meet their daily nutritional needs in two or three hours. They fill the ecological niche of flower pollinator that bats and bees fill in other habitats, and indeed lories are primary pollinators on many of the small islands they inhabit.
